In recent years, ice blue dials have emerged as a major trend in the watch market. Increasingly, collectors and enthusiasts are drawn to Rolex’s ice blue dials. At the same time, their high prices often come as a surprise. This article takes a closer look at the appeal behind Rolex’s ice blue dials, the reasons for their pricing and the evolution across different models, offering a clearer understanding of their true value.
The Rising Popularity of Ice Blue Dials
Since around 2020, ice blue has become a trending dial color across the industry. Beyond Rolex, many brands have introduced similar light blue tones. While subtle differences exist in shade and finish, this color family continues to gain traction. Among all brands, Rolex’s ice blue dial is widely regarded as one of the defining references. One notable example is the Cosmograph Daytona Ice Blue released in 2013.
In 2021, Patek Philippe introduced a Tiffany Blue dial Nautilus to celebrate its 170th anniversary partnership with Tiffany & Co., limited to 170 pieces worldwide. Since then, many brands have followed with similar tones, fueling the popularity of ice blue and related hues.

A Platinum-Only Signature at Rolex
Within Rolex’s lineup, ice blue dials are exclusively reserved for platinum models. As platinum is an exceptionally rare metal, this directly contributes to the higher price of these watches.
Platinum offers excellent corrosion resistance and a refined, subtle luster. Combined with its rarity, it carries intrinsic value. By pairing this material with its watchmaking expertise, Rolex gives platinum models with ice blue dials a distinct presence that sets them apart from other materials.
Refined Dial Finishing
One of the defining features of Rolex ice blue dials is their refined finishing. Models such as the Cosmograph Daytona and Day-Date 40 feature a sunray finish, where light radiates outward from the center of the dial. As viewing angles change, reflections shift accordingly, altering both tone and texture. This interplay of light highlights the precision of Rolex’s dial craftsmanship. The sunray ice blue dial pairs especially well with platinum, enhancing the overall visual harmony and elevating the watch’s appeal.
How It Differs from Other Blue Dials
Rolex ice blue dials are treated with PVD coating which is a process that deposits a thin, durable layer onto the metal surface, giving the dial a smooth and luminous finish. Because the coating is extremely thin, it preserves fine details such as sunray brushing or guilloché patterns. Its durability also makes it suitable for use in sports watch components.
In addition to ice blue, Rolex offers other blue tones such as turquoise blue, bright blue, and royal blue. However, unlike ice blue, these tend to be deeper shades and are typically paired with stainless steel or 18K gold models. In other words, Rolex’s dial colors are not just aesthetic choices, they are carefully matched with specific materials to define each model’s identity.
Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona Ice Blue 126506
In 2023, marking the 60th anniversary of the Cosmograph Daytona, Rolex updated the entire collection. One of the standout releases was Ref. 126506. This model introduced a transparent caseback for the first time in the professional lineup, allowing a view of the in-house automatic Cal. 4131 movement.
Paired with the ice blue dial, the Cerachrom bezel comes in a distinctive chestnut brown, creating strong visual contrast. The watch features 18K gold hands and indices, along with Chromalight luminescence for excellent readability in low light. A diamond-set index version is also available, adding further collectibility.

Oyster Perpetual Land-Dweller 40 127336
In 2025, Rolex introduced a new collection, the Oyster Perpetual Land-Dweller. Its design recalls the integrated look of the historic Oysterquartz, now combined with a newly developed Flat Jubilee bracelet, giving the case and bracelet a seamless appearance.
The real innovation lies inside. It is powered by the newly developed Cal. 7135 movement, running at a high frequency of 36,000 vibrations per hour and featuring the new Dynapulse escapement. The collection also includes a platinum version with an ice blue dial. The hexagonal pattern on the dial is created using femtosecond laser technology, resulting in a distinctive and modern aesthetic.

Perpetual 1908 52506
The Perpetual 1908, introduced in 2023, replaced the Cellini line and takes its name from the year Rolex was founded. Like the Cellini, it focuses on classic and understated design. The ice blue dial on 52506 stands apart from Daytona and Day-Date models, featuring a rice-grain guilloché pattern crafted using traditional techniques.
The polished case, combined with a domed and fluted bezel as well as fluting on the caseback, reinforces its dress watch character. The transparent caseback reveals the Cal. 7140 movement, showcasing refined finishing and mechanical detail.
