Cartier Tank, Panthère de Cartier or Baignoire: Which One To Choose?

When choosing a watch as a gift for a woman, Cartier is undoubtedly one of the most appealing brands to consider. Since its founding in Paris in 1847, Cartier has held an important position in both jewellery and watchmaking. The brand was famously described by King Edward VII as ‘the jeweller of kings and the king of jewellers’, and its long history gives a Cartier watch a meaning beyond the watch itself. Among its most iconic collections, the Cartier Tank, Panthère de Cartier and Baignoire each have a distinctive design identity. The Tank Must features a clean rectangular case, the Panthère de Cartier is known for its fluid bracelet and jewellery-like elegance while the Baignoire stands out with its graceful oval case. All three collections are distinctive yet versatile enough for everyday styling.

Cartier Tank

The Cartier Tank was created by Louis Cartier in 1917, with its design inspired by the Renault FT tanks used during the First World War. The first Tank watches were officially released in 1919. Over the past century, the Tank has been worn by notable figures including Jacqueline Kennedy, Andy Warhol and Princess Diana, becoming one of Cartier’s most recognisable watch designs.

The Tank Must WSTA0107 features a stainless steel case measuring 29.5mm in length and 22mm in width, with a slim thickness of just 6.6mm. It is paired with a silver dial, blued-steel sword-shaped hands and a crown set with a synthetic spinel, continuing Cartier’s classic design language in a clean and understated form. The stainless steel bracelet is easy to style for work, casual wear or more formal occasions. Powered by a quartz movement, it does not require daily winding, making it particularly convenient for women who are not accustomed to wearing mechanical watches.

Cartier Panthère de Cartier

The panther has been one of Cartier’s most recognisable symbols since the early 20th century and has long appeared throughout the Maison’s jewellery creations. In the 1980s, Cartier brought the elegance and movement of the panther into watch design with the creation of Panthère de Cartier. Its signature multi-link bracelet is one of the collection’s defining features. Light, flexible and fluid, it fits naturally around the wrist and gives the watch a distinctly jewellery-like character. Cartier itself also describes Panthère as ‘both a watch and a piece of jewellery’.

The Panthère de Cartier WSPN0012 is powered by a quartz movement and features a stainless steel case measuring just 6mm thick. It is fitted with a sapphire crystal, blued-steel sword-shaped hands and an octagonal crown set with a blue synthetic spinel, all classic Cartier design details. Its delicate proportions and strong jewellery character also make it easy to wear alongside bracelets, bangles or other jewellery.

Cartier Baignoire

In 1912, Louis Cartier began exploring case shapes beyond the traditional round watch. By 1958, this design direction had evolved into the more curved Oval Cintrée form, which was officially named Baignoire in 1973. Baignoire means ‘bathtub’ in French, a reference to the collection’s soft, flowing and slightly elongated oval case.

The Baignoire WGBA0040 features an 18K yellow gold case with a thickness of 7.2mm, paired with a black lacquered dial and black calfskin strap. The combination is elegant without being excessive. Compared with the clean and classic character of the Tank Must or the softer jewellery-inspired appeal of Panthère de Cartier, the Baignoire places greater emphasis on individuality and personal style. With smaller women’s watches and jewellery watches returning to the spotlight in recent years, the Baignoire has once again become one of Cartier’s most closely watched collections.
